Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has emerged as a powerful tool for communication and information sharing, transforming the way individuals and communities engage with news, security issues, and public safety. In Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp have become essential channels for spreading information about security threats, emergencies, and safety measures. According to Yusuf and Bala (2023), social media has played a pivotal role in enhancing security awareness by providing real-time updates on criminal activities and security operations. It has enabled citizens to report incidents, share information, and engage with law enforcement agencies more directly. However, the role of social media in security awareness is not without challenges, including the spread of misinformation and its potential to incite panic or violence. This study aims to appraise the role of social media in enhancing security awareness in Bauchi LGA, evaluating its impact on public safety and its effectiveness as a tool for community engagement.
